If you've recently started working with crystals - or you've had a collection for a while and never really known what to do beyond choosing them - crystal cleansing and charging is probably the next thing on your list.
You've likely heard both terms used interchangeably. They're not the same thing, and understanding the difference changes how you care for your crystals.
Cleansing removes energy a crystal has absorbed - from environments, emotions, other people, or simply the accumulation of daily use. Think of it as clearing the slate.
Charging restores and amplifies a crystal's natural energy - giving it a boost and, when paired with a clear intention, aligning it with your specific purpose.
Most crystals benefit from both, done regularly. This guide covers the most effective methods for each, what to watch out for, and which crystals need special care.

WAYS TO CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS
Cleansing your crystals doesn't need to be elaborate. The methods that work best are the ones you'll actually do consistently. Here are the most widely used approaches.
Running Water:
Running water is one of the oldest and most instinctive ways to cleanse a crystal. The idea is simple - water neutralises stagnant or absorbed energy and carries it away.
Hold your crystal under cool running water for thirty seconds to a minute. Natural running water - a stream, river, or rainfall - is considered most effective, but tap water works for regular cleansing. Set a clear intention while you do it: I cleanse this crystal of all that it has absorbed. It is clear and ready.
Important: Not all crystals are water-safe. Soft, porous, or salt-containing stones can dissolve, crack, or lose their surface when exposed to water. See the full guide below before using this method.
Best for: Quartz family stones - Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Citrine. Harder stones like Tiger's Eye and Obsidian are also generally water-safe.
Salt Water:
Salt has been used for centuries as a purifying agent. Salt water is considered a more intensive cleanse than plain running water - useful after a particularly heavy or emotionally draining period.
Dissolve sea salt or himalayan salt in water and submerge your crystal for a few hours or overnight. Alternatively, bury the crystal in dry salt without water, which avoids the risk of water damage to more delicate stones.
Rinse thoroughly with plain water afterwards and dry completely.
Important: Salt water is harsh on many crystals. Anything soft, metalite, or with a layered structure can be permanently damaged. When in doubt, use a different method. The stones to avoid with salt water overlap significantly with those that can't get wet.
Best for: Crystals you know are hard and non-porous. Use with caution and only when you're confident about the stone's composition.
Sage & Incense Smoke:
Smoke cleansing is one of the most versatile methods because it works for every crystal, regardless of composition. It's the go-to choice for stones that can't be submerged in water.
Light your sage bundle, palo santo, or incense stick and allow it to produce a steady stream of smoke. Pass your crystal through the smoke several times, rotating it so all sides are exposed. Thirty seconds to a minute is sufficient for most purposes.
As you do it, hold the intention of clearing: I release all energy this crystal has absorbed. It returns to its natural state.
Best for: All crystals, including those that can't get wet. Particularly recommended for Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Lepidolite, and other water-sensitive stones.

Visualisation:
Visualisation is the most accessible cleansing method of all - it requires nothing except your intention and a few minutes of focused attention.
Hold your crystal in both hands. Close your eyes. Breathe slowly and picture a bright, clear white or golden light surrounding the stone. Imagine it moving through the crystal, dissolving and carrying away any absorbed energy, until the stone feels clear and light in your hands.
This method is underestimated by beginners because it feels too simple. It's worth taking seriously. The mechanism is the same as all other cleansing methods - intentional energy direction - just without a physical medium.
Best for: All crystals, any time. Especially useful when you want to cleanse quickly before using a crystal, or when you don't have access to other methods.
WAYS TO CHARGE YOUR CRYSTALS:
Once cleansed, charging your crystal amplifies its natural energy and - when paired with a clear intention - aligns it with a specific purpose. Think of it as filling the crystal back up after clearing it out.
Moonlight:
Moonlight is the most popular and widely recommended charging method, and for good reason - it's gentle, universally safe for all crystals, and requires nothing more than a windowsill and an overnight wait.
Place your crystal on a windowsill or outdoors where it will be exposed to moonlight. The full moon is the most potent time for charging, but any phase of the moon works. Leave it overnight and retrieve it in the morning.
The full moon is particularly associated with amplification and release - charging your crystals under a full moon is said to both clear residual energy and restore the stone's natural vitality simultaneously, making it an efficient one-step option when you want to cleanse and charge in one go.
Best for: All crystals. This is the safest charging method for every stone in your collection, including those that are light-sensitive or water-sensitive.
Note: Some crystals are not suitable for prolonged sunlight but are perfectly safe under moonlight - see the section below on crystals that can't be charged in sunlight.
Sunlight:
Sunlight is a powerful, energising charging method - particularly associated with vitality, confidence, and solar energy. A few hours in direct morning sunlight is generally recommended over prolonged afternoon exposure.
Place your crystal in a spot where it will receive direct sunlight for two to four hours. Morning sun is considered the most balanced - afternoon sun can be intense and is more likely to cause fading in colour-sensitive stones.
Important: Several crystals fade, crack, or lose their colour with prolonged sun exposure. This is one of the most common crystal care mistakes and unfortunately permanent. Always check before leaving a stone in direct sun. See the full list below.
Best for: Clear Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Tiger's Eye, Carnelian, Sunstone, Red Jasper. Avoid extensive sunlight for Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Aquamarine, Fluorite, and most coloured stones.
Soil or Nature:
Burying a crystal in the earth - or simply placing it on natural ground - returns it to the source of its energy. This method is associated with deep clearing and grounding, and is particularly recommended after intense use or an emotionally heavy period.
Bury your crystal a few centimetres into soil in your garden and leave it for twenty-four hours to a week depending on how deep a reset you feel it needs. Also, be sure to mark the spot so you can find it later!! Rinse off any soil with clean water afterwards (only for water-safe ones, otherwise wipe clean with a dry cloth).
Alternatively, simply place your crystal on a patch of grass, a rock, or natural earth and leave it outdoors overnight. The effect is gentler but still meaningful.
Best for: All crystals for surface placement. For burial, avoid water-sensitive crystals the moisture in soil can still cause damage over extended periods.
Crystal Charging Station:
Some crystals can amplify and charge others when placed nearby or in contact with them. Selenite and Clear Quartz are the most widely used for this purpose - both are considered self-cleansing and are used by many crystal practitioners as a dedicated charging surface.
A Selenite plate or slab is the most common setup - place your other crystals on top of or beside it overnight. Clear Quartz clusters or points work similarly, particularly when the points are directed toward the stones you're charging.
This method is clean, convenient, and can be left in place as a permanent part of your crystal care routine - every crystal on the plate is being maintained without any active effort on your part.
Best for: All crystals. Particularly convenient for those that you work with daily, as the selenite plate can sit on your nightstand or dresser and charge your crystals passively overnight.

CAN CRYSTALS GET WET?
Some can; some absolutely cannot.
The general rule is based on hardness. Crystals are rated on the Mohs hardness scale from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest). Stones rated 6 or above are generally considered water-safe for brief cleansing. Stones below 6 can absorb water, dissolve, crack, rust, or lose their surface polish.
However, hardness isn't the only factor. Salt content, porosity, and metallic inclusions all affect how a crystal responds to water - which is why even some harder stones are better kept dry.
The safest approach for any new crystal: if you're not certain it's water-safe, use smoke or moonlight instead. These methods work for every stone without exception.
Which crystals can and can't go in water?
Generally Water-Safe: These crystals are hard enough for brief water cleansing under running water:
- Clear Quartz (Mohs 7) - one of the most water-safe crystals
- Rose Quartz (Mohs 7) - safe for short water exposure
- Amethyst (Mohs 7) - water-safe but can fade in sunlight
- Smoky Quartz (Mohs 7) - water-safe
- Citrine (Mohs 7) - water-safe
- Tiger's Eye (Mohs 6.5-7) - water-safe
- Obsidian (Mohs 5-5.5) - generally water-safe for brief rinsing
- Carnelian (Mohs 6.5-7) - water-safe
- Green Aventurine (Mohs 6.5-7) - water-safe
- Red Jasper (Mohs 6.5-7) - water-safe
Avoid prolonged submersion for any of these - a brief rinse under running water is sufficient and safer than soaking.
Not Water-Safe - Keep Dry: These crystals should never be submerged in water and are best cleansed with smoke, moonlight, or selenite:
- Selenite (Mohs 2) - will dissolve in water
- Malachite (Mohs 3.5-4) - toxic when wet; keep completely dry
- Pyrite (Mohs 6-6.5) - contains iron; will rust and crumble
- Lepidolite (Mohs 2.5-3) - soft and layered; water will damage the surface
- Fluorite (Mohs 4) - porous and soft; water causes long-term damage
- Celestite (Mohs 3-3.5) - will dissolve slowly in water
- Angelite (Mohs 3.5) - porous; absorbs water and loses its surface
- Sodalite (Mohs 5.5-6) - technically borderline but best kept dry
- Labradorite (Mohs 6-6.5) - can be briefly rinsed but avoid soaking
- Moonstone (Mohs 6-6.5) - brief rinsing only; avoid prolonged exposure

TO FINISH
Crystal care doesn't need to be complicated. Cleanse regularly - smoke and moonlight are the safest options for every stone. Charge intentionally - moonlight is universally effective, sunlight works for harder, non-colour-sensitive stones. And always check before putting a crystal near water or in direct sun.
The more consistently you care for your crystals, the more consistently they'll support you.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
How often should I cleanse my crystals?
Crystals used daily - particularly those worn on the body or used in emotionally demanding situations - benefit from cleansing at least once a week. Crystals used occasionally can be cleansed monthly or whenever they feel energetically heavy. A useful guideline: if you notice your crystal doesn't feel as clear or as present as it usually does, it probably needs cleansing. Trust that instinct. There's no harm in cleansing too often - only in cleansing too rarely.
Do I need to cleanse my crystal before using it?
Yes - cleansing a crystal before its first use is widely recommended. A new crystal has passed through multiple hands and environments before reaching you, and cleansing it clears any accumulated energy so it's neutral and ready for your intention. Smoke cleansing or moonlight are the best methods for a first cleanse, as they work for all crystal types without risk of damage. Once cleansed, set your intention with the crystal before using it for the first time.
What is the difference between cleansing and charging crystals?
Cleansing removes energy a crystal has absorbed - from environments, emotions, or daily use - returning it to a neutral state. Charging restores and amplifies the crystal's natural energy, and when paired with a clear intention, aligns it with a specific purpose. Both are part of regular crystal care. Most practitioners cleanse first, then charge - though some methods, like full moon exposure, are considered to do both simultaneously. Skipping cleansing and going straight to charging is like trying to fill a glass that's already full of something else.
Can I cleanse multiple crystals at the same time?
Yes - you can cleanse several crystals at once using smoke, moonlight, a selenite plate, or soil. When using smoke, pass each crystal through individually to ensure all surfaces are exposed. For moonlight or a selenite plate, simply place them together. When using water, rinse each crystal separately and confirm each one is water-safe before submerging. Cleansing multiple crystals together is efficient and doesn't reduce the effectiveness for any individual stone.
How do I know when a crystal needs cleansing?
The most common signs a crystal needs cleansing are: it feels heavier or duller than usual, you've been through a particularly stressful or emotionally intense period while wearing it, it's been handled by multiple people, or you simply haven't cleansed it in a while and it's been in regular use. Some people also notice a subtle shift in how the crystal feels energetically - less present, less clear. If you're unsure, cleanse it. There's no downside to cleansing a crystal that didn't need it, but there is a downside to skipping it when it does.
